Gamer Morte Moya put together an MP3 player from an old NES controller, and then took it a step further by making a speaker out of an NES game cartridge. He says:
“Some of you may have seen my NES Controller MP3 player. This is a companion project for it. I sometimes like to sit around and listen to music so I made these powered speakers. And since it was to go with the NES controller I made it in a NES cartridge. Now before you even read any further. These are not really loud. Just so you know. They are great for sitting at your desk, but you would not want to have them as music for a party or anything. Now you could make a larger more powerful amp, but I didn’t. Japanese architect Shigeru Ban has introduced a bridge over the Gardon river in France made entirely out of cardboard tubes. The bridge is made from 281 cardboard tubs and is strong enough to carry 20 people at a time.
Weighing 7.5 tonnes, the bridge is made from 281 cardboard tubes, each 11.5 centimetres (four inches) across and 11.9 millimetres thick. The steps are recycled paper and plastic and the foundations wooden boxes packed with sand.It's an impressive achievement, but what happens when it rains? Or if somebody drops a cigarette? I could make a safer bridge out of sticks of dynamite.

Who knew there was such a big market for levitating globes? This one isn't nearly as cool though since it needs a top and bottom magnet.
A magnetic field sensor continually measures the height at which the globes are suspended. This sensor feeds that data into a micro computer in the base of the unit. This computer then calibrates the electronic magnets at the top of the frame based on the distance between the globes and the top magnet to keep the globes correctly positioned.There's a 4" and 8" version which sell for $39.99 and $74.99 respectively. Or a 443,520" version which I'm selling for $1 million. It floats in space and circles the sun and doesn't even need a stupid magnet.

Jul 27 2007 Bee Miniature Paper Sculpture
This is a miniature paper sculpture of a bee which stands at 6 cm tall and was designed and crafted by artist Elsita.
For the making of this bee I arranged 25 little pieces of paper that I carefully cut with a sharp knife and scissors. I gave volume to the pieces by pressing them from the backside with a wooden tool. Then the parts were glued together with professional acid free glue. The paper used is white 260 g/m smooth Bristol.Each is hand made and will look slightly different. The artist is selling them for $49.50 each, which seems a little steep for something I could probably make myself. And by 'probably make myself' I mean crumple up some paper and glue it together and then start crying because it looks absolutely nothing like this.

So at Christmas we pulled out the best armored personnel carrier from 30 we had laying around. A bit of a special not only fitted with a turret for when it was on the Berlin wall, and one of only 13 ever made but she also had some strange mine laying or clearing gismo on its rear which we binned. We decided on Gloss white as you would. Chopped a few windows in the side fitted smoked glass Fridge; twin DVD's reversing cameras completely re trimmed the interior. We found the army had left the massive diesel powered crew heater in one of the 432,s so we threw that in as well.The Tank Limo will set you back between $3200 to $8000 per hire, but can you imagine pulling up anywhere in this thing? It's a limousine, but it's also a tank. And, God willing, one day it'll also be my home.

Garnet Hertz has implanted a miniature webserver in the body of a frog specimen, which is suspended in a clear glass container of mineral oil, an inert liquid that does not conduct electricity. The frog is viewable on the Internet, and on the computer monitor across the room, through a webcam placed on the wall of the gallery. Through an Ethernet cable connected to the embedded webserver, remote viewers can trigger movement in either the right or left leg of the frog, thereby updating Luigi Galvani's original 1786 experiment causing the legs of a dead frog to twitch simply by touching muscles and nerves with metal.Yes, that's right. He stuck a webserver into a frog and is allowing remote viewers to move its legs around. Some might call this useless or pointless, but I call it the greatest human achievement since the moon landing.

Due to its Y-frame shape, it’s comfortably shock-proof without loosing ground contact. The frame and handle bars are connected via a frame-pivot, guiding cables through the frame as one turns. This guy was playing Reader Rabbit: Thinking Adventures with his son when his CD exploded in the optical drive.
We both sat there for a second trying to figure out what had happened and that is when I saw the front trim piece of the DVD drive hanging from the computer. The piece that hit me in the leg was one of the plastic clips that holds the trim piece in place and as soon as I saw what had hit me, I knew the CD was toast. After unplugging the machine and a little disassembly, I had the drive out and removed most of the pieces from the explosion.You can check out all of the pictures here. A TSA guard at JFK refused to let a passenger through because he thought their DIY iPod charger (above) looked like an IED.
I tell him it is a battery charger for my iPod. He asks if I made it myself, to which I reply that I purchased a kit over the internet. He says that he can't let me on the plane with it. I explain to him that I have flown with it 4-6 times a month for a year now and nobody has questioned it. He says, "Not on my watch and not with my people." He swabs the device and runs it through the calorimeter. Again, no residue.I understand being cautious when it comes to airport security, but this is ridiculous. This is basically some batteries and plastic glued to a USB port. Yeah, it looks suspicious, until you actually look at it.
I ask why it can't be taken on the plane and he said, "Because it looks like an IED."

The folks at MIT have developed a new space suit to allow greater mobility for astronauts called the BioSuit. They expect to have it ready for use in about ten years, and it would be invaluable for missions to someplace like Mars, where current spacesuits are just too bulky.
Newman's prototype suit is a revolutionary departure from the traditional model. Instead of using gas pressurization, which exerts a force on the astronaut's body to protect it from the vacuum of space, the suit relies on mechanical counter-pressure, which involves wrapping tight layers of material around the body. The trick is to make a suit that is skintight but stretches with the body, allowing freedom of movement. Key to their design is the pattern of lines on the suit, which correspond to lines of non-extension (lines on the skin that don't extend when you move your leg). Those lines provide a stiff "skeleton" of structural support, while providing maximal mobility.This thing looks like it was pulled out of a cartoon. If they actually get it to work it'll completely change the way I look at astronauts. Namely with more boners.

Art graduate Lauren Porter knitted herself a Ferrari for her honors degree at Bath Spa University. Ananova reports:
The classic red bodywork consists of 250 squares of garter stitch made by Lauren and 20 family members and friends. The windows are V-shaped stocking stitch, while the details are crochet and the badge is embroidered. It's all supported by a steel frame which Lauren, 22, of Greatham, Hants, welded herself.I don't know what Bath Spa University is, but if they take a knitted Ferrari as a final project then they're okay in my book.
NOTE: If you want to be taken seriously as a university, nothing says "we're credible" like naming yourselves Bath Spa University.

Inventor Michael Killian has designed the Sideways Bike, which is exactly what it sounds like: a bike you ride sideways. The Sideways Bike uses Front to Back balance rather than the traditional Left to Right balance used in regular bikes, creating the sensation of surfing down the road. Sort of like tying a surfboard to the back of a car and "hanging ten." Although that sensation is less like surfing, and more like falling off a surfboard and being dragged on pavement for 100 meters.

A 1,500 pound wrecking ball broke loose and ran out of control down a hill for nearly a mile before plowing into things and ending up in the trunk of a student's car.
“The cable just snapped,” Meadville police officer Brian Joseph said. “It just so happened that it snapped at a point and time when the ball was outside the wall.” The out of control ball hit parked cars and even bounced off the curb, before it rolled into the trunk of a student's car, ramming it into cars in front of it.Could've been a lot worse. The 1993 Lincoln Mark VIII Rolling Door Concept Car was designed back in 1993 but never made it to the market because, well, it's ridiculous. Basically instead of opening, the door just disappears into the car. There's an eBay sale of it going on (right now at $19,000) and according to their description:
"Lincoln executives were concerned about the heavy and wide doors on the Mark VIII in the early 1990's especially in large cities with tight parking spots. They were toying with the idea of a Mark VIII that had doors that disappeared beneath the car which would require no additional space for the doors to swing open in order to allow the occupant to exit or enter. Back in the day, the major auto makers would sub-contract their concept designs to other engineering firms who specialiazed in auto concepts and executions. In this particular case, this Lincoln Mark VIII was shipped over to Joalto Design Inc. near Detroit...who created this amazing, one of a kind concept car and shipped it back to Lincoln for executive approval...Unfortunately, the Ford Motor Company executives did not like the design and ordered the car (and the concept) to be sent to the junkyard and destroyed. Nimbus has put together the ultimate minimalist unicycle which they're calling the Ultimate Wheel. It's basically a 20 inch wheel with pedals attached. And that's it. Nixon's Lodown digital watch is pre-programmed with tide charts for 200 beaches around the world for the next 15 years. It uses a backlit LCD screen which shows a pixel graph of the current surf height. It's made from reinforced polycarbonate, is water resistant up to 100 meters, and costs about $90. Although I don't understand how they managed to pre-program tides for the next 15 years. Isn't it just a bunch of wild guessing at that point?

Korean company GPNC has put together a 70 inch all-in-one PC, making it the world's largest. The monitor is meant for commercial use and will come in both touch-screen and standard LCD models. Although the manufacturer didn't even bother taking a product shot without an XP error message in it, so who knows what kind of effort they're putting into this thing. If you open up the monitor it's probably just filled with styrofoam peanuts instead of actual electronics.

Consumerist launched a three month investigation into Geek Squad on claims the technicians would browse computers for sensitive files and then copy them over to their personal drives. They loaded up a computer with porn, rigged the computer to capture video of itself, and then caught a Geek Squad technician stealing the porn off the hard drive. Geek Squad responded that it was an isolated incident, although insiders say the practice is extremely common. These are tiny little wooden speakers which are made in Korea and cost about $45. Each speaker gives about five hours of playback, although at 1.5 watts per channel they aren't exactly the most powerful speakers on the market. They are, however, the most wood-like. Unless you count the ones I built. Although those are aren't really speakers, they're more like blocks of wood.

Eleven 7-Eleven locations have been converted to Kwik-E-Marts to promote the new Simpsons movie, and this is the one in Burbank, California. Not only did they change the name, but they're also selling Kwik-E-Mart products like Squishees and Krusty-O's. They even have characters like Jasper as the 'Freezer Geezer' littered about the store. Although if you happen to wander in, I'm sure you'll find the ratio of 'nerds with cameras' is about 10 million times higher than an actual Kwik-E-Mart. And by nerds with cameras I mean me. With a camera. Lying under the Squishee machine passed out with my mouth open.

Jul 2 2007 Bar Code Chandelier
The Bar Code Chandelier is an oversize chandelier based on the ubiquitous bar code graphic. It's laser cut with black and transparent acrylic and looks absolutely amazing. Although I prefer my chandeliers to be way more fancy and gaudy. How else are people going to know how rich I am? My top hat and monocle just aren't enough to cut it sometimes.
