NES MP3 player and speakers

nes-mp3.jpg
Gamer Morte Moya put together an MP3 player from an old NES controller, and then took it a step further by making a speaker out of an NES game cartridge. He says:
“Some of you may have seen my NES Controller MP3 player. This is a companion project for it. I sometimes like to sit around and listen to music so I made these powered speakers. And since it was to go with the NES controller I made it in a NES cartridge. Now before you even read any further. These are not really loud. Just so you know. They are great for sitting at your desk, but you would not want to have them as music for a party or anything. Now you could make a larger more powerful amp, but I didn’t. Just FYI.”
First a computer mouse, and now an MP3 player and speakers? I'm excited to see what the future holds in the noble art of NES controller stuffing. I think if I try hard enough I might be able to fit my entire car into there.
More images and video of the NES sound system after the jump.

Jul 31 2007 Human Tetris Round II

What's that you say? One round of Human Tetris just not enough? I couldn't agree more.

Jul 31 2007 LEGO Star Wars Millennium Falcon

lego-milenium-falcon.jpg
For $499.99, LEGO is offering this Star Wars Millennium Falcon which they claim is the biggest LEGO set ever made. The kit contains 5195 pieces and, when completed, will stand almost 3 feet long. Each kit comes with a certificate of authenticity and the whole thing goes on sale in October.
This kind of makes me wish I wore a diaper today because, man, my pants haven't been this wet since, well, never. Because I don't wet myself. That's gross.

Jul 31 2007 CGDC3: Gimme Friction Baby

gimme-friction-baby.jpg
Gimme Friction Baby is the winner of the 3rd Casual Gameplay Design Competition. You can play it here, or check out the rest of the entries here. Personally, I didn't find it to be all that fun. I mean, what am I supposed to do after my score hits 10 gazillion?

Jul 30 2007 S2 updates the classic hammer

new-hammer.jpg
ATOMdesign was asked by Vaughan & Bushnell to re-imagine the classic hammer and the S2 is what they came up with.
ATOMdesign didn’t take the challenge lightly. They not only delivered a revolutionary new hammer design but secured a U.S. utility Patent with 27 claims! The Split-Head hammer offers many new features never seen before in the industry such as integrated overstrike plates, modular head construction, and elastomeric shockgaskets just to name a few.
But the real question remains: if I hit somebody over the head with it will I still go to jail? Because that's my number one complaint with traditional hammers.

Jul 30 2007 Bridge made from cardboard tubes

paper-bridge.jpg
Japanese architect Shigeru Ban has introduced a bridge over the Gardon river in France made entirely out of cardboard tubes. The bridge is made from 281 cardboard tubs and is strong enough to carry 20 people at a time.
Weighing 7.5 tonnes, the bridge is made from 281 cardboard tubes, each 11.5 centimetres (four inches) across and 11.9 millimetres thick. The steps are recycled paper and plastic and the foundations wooden boxes packed with sand.
It's an impressive achievement, but what happens when it rains? Or if somebody drops a cigarette? I could make a safer bridge out of sticks of dynamite.

Jul 30 2007 LeBron James Etch A Sketch portrait

This is a sped up video of artist George Vlosich creating an Etch A Sketch portrait of LeBron James. The original took five hours but this video compresses the whole thing down to three minutes. The likeness isn't so great, but it's an Etch A Sketch so who cares. If I tried doing this I'd end up with a broken Etch A Sketch with "Srew this!" written on the screen in marker.

Jul 30 2007 Possessed Books

possessed-books.jpg
For $25 you can get these Possessed Books, which look like regular Victorian books but contain a motion detector so whenever somebody walks by the middle book will slide out. The books also emit "spooky sounds" which I imagine to be more comical than scary. If you really want to scare people, just hide in your bookshelf, and whenever somebody walks by jump out and punch them in the face.

Jul 30 2007 The Doorknob Condition ensures privacy

privacy-knob-01.jpg
privacy-knob-02.jpg
You know how most people put a tie around their knob or a "Do Not Disturb" sign to ensure privacy? Well designer Arnaud Lapierre decided that wasn't enough, so he put together the Doorknob Condition, which is a doorknob that uses a pulley system to retract the entire doorknob, preventing anybody from getting in without breaking down the door. Although I still prefer my method of keeping people out: building the door out of a giant angry bear.
Check out more shots of this thing in action after the jump.

Jul 27 2007 The Strangest Sights in Google Earth

strange-google-earth.jpg
PC World has compiled their list of the strangest sights in Google Earth.
With its detailed satellite photos, Google's interactive map lets everyone be a virtual globetrotter. And some of the things we've found in our travels are downright bizarre.
Oddly left off the list were my giant biceps. Oh right, it's 'strangest' sights, not 'most awe inspiring.'

Jul 27 2007 Crowd Farm turns walking into electricity

crowd-farm.jpg
Two graduate students at MIT's School of Architecture and Planning are developing what they call the "Crowd Farm", which is a smart floor that would harness the energy of people walking over it and turn it into electricity.
A responsive sub-flooring system made up of blocks that depress slightly under the force of human steps would be installed beneath the station's main lobby. The slippage of the blocks against one another as people walked would generate power through the principle of the dynamo, a device that converts the energy of motion into that of an electric current.
The obvious places to put this in use would be areas with heavy foot traffic, like malls and transit stations. Or my bedroom. It's like a never ending line of ladies in there.

Jul 27 2007 Hello Kitty in Swarovski crystals

crystal-hello-kitty.jpg
Contrary to popular belief, a Hello Kitty doll made from 62,000 Swarovski crystals is 100% absolutely necessary. This monstrosity was displayed at the opening of a “Hello Kitty Selection” event at Mitsukoshi Department Store in Tokyo and costs 8 million yen ($66,115). And just look at how it delights the children. I haven't seen a child this happy since, well, the last time I was at the dentist.

Jul 27 2007 Levitating Desktop Globes

levitating-globes.jpg
Who knew there was such a big market for levitating globes? This one isn't nearly as cool though since it needs a top and bottom magnet.
A magnetic field sensor continually measures the height at which the globes are suspended. This sensor feeds that data into a micro computer in the base of the unit. This computer then calibrates the electronic magnets at the top of the frame based on the distance between the globes and the top magnet to keep the globes correctly positioned.
There's a 4" and 8" version which sell for $39.99 and $74.99 respectively. Or a 443,520" version which I'm selling for $1 million. It floats in space and circles the sun and doesn't even need a stupid magnet.

Jul 27 2007 Bee Miniature Paper Sculpture

paper-bee.jpg
This is a miniature paper sculpture of a bee which stands at 6 cm tall and was designed and crafted by artist Elsita.
For the making of this bee I arranged 25 little pieces of paper that I carefully cut with a sharp knife and scissors. I gave volume to the pieces by pressing them from the backside with a wooden tool. Then the parts were glued together with professional acid free glue. The paper used is white 260 g/m smooth Bristol.
Each is hand made and will look slightly different. The artist is selling them for $49.50 each, which seems a little steep for something I could probably make myself. And by 'probably make myself' I mean crumple up some paper and glue it together and then start crying because it looks absolutely nothing like this.

Jul 26 2007 The Blow Table Lamp

blow-table-lamp.jpg
The Blow Table Lamp is lamp designed by Studio Italia Design that features a low-voltage lamp encased in an outer, clear-crystal globe.
Lamp direction is controlled by a matching decorative magnet located on the outside of the clear globe. Place it almost anywhere on the globe and the inside lamp will follow. The Blow Table Lamp is a studio quality work of art that is fun to maneuver.
This thing looks so good but also seems so impractical. How are you supposed to change the bulb? I'm assuming the case comes off but that sort of defeats the whole purpose. You could just stick a glass case around a regular lamp. And at $1,200 the whole point of this thing is to not be a regular lamp. Well, that and to bankrupt you.

Jul 26 2007 Transformers Bumblebee Speakers

bumblebee-speakers.jpg
Brando is selling these dancing Transformers Bumblebee speakers for $58.90. The Bumblebee speakers will actually dance to your music and even play it back with Transformers sound effects.
In a twist of customized cool, Bumblebee takes your tunes and plays them back to you with TRANSFORMERS sound effects! Touch Bumblebee to mix beats with your music, or sit back and watch it dance!
The dancing sounds neat, but why would anybody want Transformers sound effects in their music? It'd be like buying a speaker to take a crap in your ear.

Jul 26 2007 First Person Pinball Machine

furminator.jpg
This is a few years old, but the Furminator is a first person pinball machine that puts you inside the perspective of the actual machine:
The ////furminator is a pinball machine that puts the player in a first person perspective similar to modern "EGO Shooter" video games. Like being inside a huge VR-helmet, the player's head is stuck into the ////furminator capsule. His nose is situated right behind the flipper fingers, only centimeters away from the ball. Sealed off from reality and with his head arrested inside a force-feedback-helmet, the sound- and lighteffects, the mechanical noises of the pinball and the absorbing perspective create a highly immersive mechatronic environment.
I've always wanted to play pinball in the first person. I've also wanted to play it while on fire and juggling chainsaws. Some might consider me an"unusual" person, but my mom says I'm special.

Jul 26 2007 Levitation desk

levitation-table.jpg
The Levitation desk is a desk with one leg.
The challenge was to use an unique leg which could be placed anywhere under the desk. We find a solution, I would conceal it...
I'm not sure how it works but I'm guessing it's a really really heavy leg they've got on there. Like really heavy. Really really really heavy. Otherwise anything you put on the desk would just tip it over. Did I mention it was heavy? Because it's definitely heavy.

Jul 25 2007 Lightspeaker Lamp

light-speaker.jpg
The Lightspeaker Lamp was designed by LYX Furniture and Light to look like a floor speaker.
The "bass & treble reflectors" in the polished white acrylic box are really light reflectors with mirror topped bulbs. And the volume control is really a dimmer.
It's a neat concept, but the exposed bulb would be blinding. Like my smile. Some people whiten their teeth using bleach, I use radioactive paint.

Jul 25 2007 Tank Limousine

tank-limo.jpg
So what do you do if you've got a few spare tanks lying around and plenty of time? Turn one of them into a limo of course.
So at Christmas we pulled out the best armored personnel carrier from 30 we had laying around. A bit of a special not only fitted with a turret for when it was on the Berlin wall, and one of only 13 ever made but she also had some strange mine laying or clearing gismo on its rear which we binned. We decided on Gloss white as you would. Chopped a few windows in the side fitted smoked glass Fridge; twin DVD's reversing cameras completely re trimmed the interior. We found the army had left the massive diesel powered crew heater in one of the 432,s so we threw that in as well.
The Tank Limo will set you back between $3200 to $8000 per hire, but can you imagine pulling up anywhere in this thing? It's a limousine, but it's also a tank. And, God willing, one day it'll also be my home.

Jul 25 2007 Garnet Hertz' Experiments in Galvanism

frog-web-server.jpg
Experiments in Galvanism is an art project by Garnet Hertz to implant a miniature webserver into the body of a frog.
Garnet Hertz has implanted a miniature webserver in the body of a frog specimen, which is suspended in a clear glass container of mineral oil, an inert liquid that does not conduct electricity. The frog is viewable on the Internet, and on the computer monitor across the room, through a webcam placed on the wall of the gallery. Through an Ethernet cable connected to the embedded webserver, remote viewers can trigger movement in either the right or left leg of the frog, thereby updating Luigi Galvani's original 1786 experiment causing the legs of a dead frog to twitch simply by touching muscles and nerves with metal.
Yes, that's right. He stuck a webserver into a frog and is allowing remote viewers to move its legs around. Some might call this useless or pointless, but I call it the greatest human achievement since the moon landing.
A disgusting pic of the insides after the jump.

Jul 24 2007 NES Gamepad Mouse

This ridiculously awesome human being took out the insides of an optical mouse and stuck them in an NES controller, creating the NES Gamepad Mouse. I wonder what else you could stuff in an NES Gamepad. An MP3 player? A camera? An entire cheese pizza?

Jul 24 2007 Fully functional Warthog

weta-warthog.jpg
From Bungie:
Um. The dudes at WETA made a Warthog. I don’t mean that they made a big plastic thing that looks like a Warthog. I mean they built a fully-functioning, four-wheel steering, powerful, off-road vehicle with a machine gun on the back. At the correct scale. If you live near Wellington, New Zealand, you might even see some crazy machine-shop dude from WETA fishtailing around your base, ahem, I mean neighborhood. What’s it for? Well, a couple of things – one of which will be one of the shorts coming from director Neill Blomkamp. We sort of blindsided you guys with the first short (Arms Race) – it had little to no context or explanation, but when you see it as it was originally intended – as part of an overall narrative, you might just pee your pants.
If getting an erection from a car is wrong then I don't want to be right.

Instructables has a nice tutorial on how this guy put together an Office Chair Bike after finding a 35 pound leather executive chair, a Princess bike, and a variety of other parts in a dumpster. And I'm not saying it's the greatest bike ever built, but, well, it is. God himself could put together a bike and it wouldn't be this glorious.

Jul 24 2007 Chinook is unbeatable at checkers

chinook.jpgCanadian researchers claim they've "solved" checkers and that their checkers-playing program, Chinook, is mathematically unbeatable.
"The program can achieve at least a draw against any opponent, playing either the black or white pieces," the researchers say in this week's online edition of the journal Science.
There are 39 trillion possible positions for the endgame and Chinook can calculate every single one of them. I'm just glad we've got researchers working on such a noble cause. Cancer? AIDS? No, my friends, checkers.

Jul 23 2007 The Light Drop

light-drop.jpg
The Light Drop is a light designed to look like it's dripping out of a faucet.
The Light Drop is supposed to make people think about how we are dealing with our natural resources , in this particular case, the water, which is the main source of energy for every living organism in this fantastic world. Water is energy indeed.
It's not currently in production and I don't completely understand the designer's explanation, but at least it looks neat.

Jul 23 2007 Oryx bike

oryx.jpg
oryx2.jpg
The Oryx is a time trial bike designed by Harald Cramer with a one-sided fork and chain-stay.
Due to its Y-frame shape, it’s comfortably shock-proof without loosing ground contact. Each bike is custom-made which guaranties the perfect fit for every rider and simplifies manufacturing; handle bars, stem and fork are made from one piece. The frame and handle bars are connected via a frame-pivot, guiding cables through the frame as one turns. One of the innovations on the bike is the crank which is designed like a ring and mounted in the inside of the frame by two ball bearings. The whole bike itself is made of carbon composite, which is baked into the frame during the molding process.
It looks great and all, but if you ride it around wouldn't you get sick of people asking you what the year 2054 is like?

Jul 20 2007 Super Mario Bros. Subwoofer

mario-subwoofer.jpg
This guy's friend offered to build him a subwoofer from scratch, so he came up with this design inspired from Super Mario Bros.
This is of course the question mark block and brick block seen in the original Super Mario Bros.! He built it to the correct dimensions and then I painted it. I am satisfied with how it turned out!
Turned out pretty awesome. The last time I tried building a subwoofer from scratch I ended up with a pile of broken electronics and catching my pants on fire.

Jul 19 2007 Aftermath of exploding CD

cd-explode.jpg
This guy was playing Reader Rabbit: Thinking Adventures with his son when his CD exploded in the optical drive.
We both sat there for a second trying to figure out what had happened and that is when I saw the front trim piece of the DVD drive hanging from the computer. The piece that hit me in the leg was one of the plastic clips that holds the trim piece in place and as soon as I saw what had hit me, I knew the CD was toast. After unplugging the machine and a little disassembly, I had the drive out and removed most of the pieces from the explosion.
You can check out all of the pictures here. I didn't even know this was possible. Although to be fair I don't know a lot of things. Did you know the Earth revolves around the Sun? I know. Shocking.

Jul 19 2007 Gold iPod Shuffle

gold-ipod-shuffle.jpg
I'll never understand why people insist on making things out of gold and selling them for outrageous prices, but German company Xexoo is doing just that, offering an iPod Shuffle made out of 18 carat gold for just over $19,000 (14,000 EUR). There's also a version with diamonds coming out soon, and each unit will be delivered in a wooden piano style box along with 24/7 support no matter where you are on the planet. And apparently this Xexoo company does this thing on a regular basis, as you can check out a variety of other gold iPod and iPod accessories on their website. But seriously, if you're willing to pay $19,000 for an iPod Shuffle I'm not even sure we're the same species.

Jul 19 2007 DIY iPod charger mistaken for bomb

tsa-bomb-ipod.jpg
A TSA guard at JFK refused to let a passenger through because he thought their DIY iPod charger (above) looked like an IED.
I tell him it is a battery charger for my iPod. He asks if I made it myself, to which I reply that I purchased a kit over the internet. He says that he can't let me on the plane with it. I explain to him that I have flown with it 4-6 times a month for a year now and nobody has questioned it. He says, "Not on my watch and not with my people." He swabs the device and runs it through the calorimeter. Again, no residue.
I ask why it can't be taken on the plane and he said, "Because it looks like an IED."
I understand being cautious when it comes to airport security, but this is ridiculous. This is basically some batteries and plastic glued to a USB port. Yeah, it looks suspicious, until you actually look at it. The police were eventually brought in and they determined it was fine, except they took the batteries. Because Lord knows what kind of mayhem you can do with two D sized batteries.

Jul 17 2007 MIT designs sleek, skintight spacesuit

mit-space-suit.jpg
The folks at MIT have developed a new space suit to allow greater mobility for astronauts called the BioSuit. They expect to have it ready for use in about ten years, and it would be invaluable for missions to someplace like Mars, where current spacesuits are just too bulky.
Newman's prototype suit is a revolutionary departure from the traditional model. Instead of using gas pressurization, which exerts a force on the astronaut's body to protect it from the vacuum of space, the suit relies on mechanical counter-pressure, which involves wrapping tight layers of material around the body. The trick is to make a suit that is skintight but stretches with the body, allowing freedom of movement. Key to their design is the pattern of lines on the suit, which correspond to lines of non-extension (lines on the skin that don't extend when you move your leg). Those lines provide a stiff "skeleton" of structural support, while providing maximal mobility.
This thing looks like it was pulled out of a cartoon. If they actually get it to work it'll completely change the way I look at astronauts. Namely with more boners.

Jul 17 2007 Home Simpson offends Pagans

home-painting.jpg
The people at Fox painted a giant Homer Simpson next to the Cerne Abbas giant - a 180ft 17th century fertility symbol carved in the hillside above Cerne Abbas - to promote the new Simpsons movie. Apparently this pissed off the people at The Pagan Federation, and their district manager said:
“It’s very disrespectful and not at all aesthetically pleasing. We were hoping for some dry weather but I think I have changed my mind. We’ll be doing some rain magic to bring the rain and wash it away. I’m amazed they got permission to do something so ridiculous. It’s an area of scientific interest.”
You know what else is an area of scientific interest? My brain. But only because it's incredible something so big could actually fit in a human skull.

They're only available by commission and come in 9, 14 and 18ct white/yellow/rose gold and platinum. The bands are available in a number of styles with the fingerprint hand-engraved on either the inside or outside of the band. There's no price listed, but I'm assuming it's a bit out of my league. Although to be fair, a stale Funyun is out of my league.

All of the works are being installed along a 40-mile stretch at the mouth of the Loire River, and this one happens to be of a giant rubber duckie. Unfortunately my entry was disqualified. Apparently running around naked on a boat while screaming "Penis!" doesn't count as art.

Jul 16 2007 Pac-Man chair

pac-man-chair.jpg
Martin B. Jing, a furniture designer from Germany, has put together this concept for a Pac-Man chair. Although I'm not sure why they decided to go with blue instead of yellow. It's like giving Spider-Man a costume made of plaid.

Bao Xishun - the world's tallest man - was taken to meet He Pingping - the world's shortest. Bao stands 7.9 feet tall while He stands only 2.4 feet tall. And me? I stand a whopping 20 feet. Around that is. I'm fat.

Jul 13 2007 Transformers' Bumblebee '77 Chevy Camaro for sale

bumblebee-sale.jpg
The original Bumblebee '77 Chevy Camaro from the new Transformers movie is up for sale on eBay. It started at $10.00 but has already climbed to $60,101.00. If you want to save some money, just buy a regular '77 Camaro for $500 and then bang it up a bit with a hammer. And maybe write "Bumblebee" along the side and attach a Post-It note that says "Not A Fake."
EDIT: The starting price was $10.00, not $14.98 like I originally said. $14.98 is the shipping price. Sigh, I'm an idiot.

Jul 12 2007 Handsoap

soap-hands.jpg
Is your regular hand soap just not creepy enough? Then get a bag of Handsoap, which is hand soap shaped into little baby hands. Each 'hand' is hand made out of goat’s milk glycerin and has a light scent. You can get a bag for $12 but, I mean, why?

Jul 12 2007 Bridge

bridge.jpg
From the London Design Festival 2006:
Bridge, by Michael Cross, is a series of steps that rise out of the water as you walk across them, as if walking on water. On entering the exhibition the visitor is met by an empty expanse of water with one step at its edge: stepping on to it forces it...
You mean this guy needs steps to walk on water? I bet he can't turn water into wine either. Ha, what a loser!
Thanks to the ridiculously good looking Duke for the tip.

Jul 12 2007 Man gets egg legs

miracle-legs.jpg
Doctors at the China Rehabilitation Research Centre in Beijing have developed an egg cup-like casing for a miracle survivor who was cut in half in a freak accident back in 1995. It took 20 doctors to save his life and nobody thought he'd be able to do anything again, but when doctors at the China Rehabilitation Research Centre heard about his case they created these robotic legs for him. It's always neat when technology is used for good. And even neater when it's used for destruction. Like this robotic bear-shark I'm working on. The world is mine!

Jul 12 2007 Girl knits herself a Ferrari

knit-ferrari.jpg
Art graduate Lauren Porter knitted herself a Ferrari for her honors degree at Bath Spa University. Ananova reports:
The classic red bodywork consists of 250 squares of garter stitch made by Lauren and 20 family members and friends. The windows are V-shaped stocking stitch, while the details are crochet and the badge is embroidered. It's all supported by a steel frame which Lauren, 22, of Greatham, Hants, welded herself.
I don't know what Bath Spa University is, but if they take a knitted Ferrari as a final project then they're okay in my book.
NOTE: If you want to be taken seriously as a university, nothing says "we're credible" like naming yourselves Bath Spa University.

Jul 12 2007 Sideways Bike

sideways-bike.jpg
Inventor Michael Killian has designed the Sideways Bike, which is exactly what it sounds like: a bike you ride sideways. The Sideways Bike uses Front to Back balance rather than the traditional Left to Right balance used in regular bikes, creating the sensation of surfing down the road. Sort of like tying a surfboard to the back of a car and "hanging ten." Although that sensation is less like surfing, and more like falling off a surfboard and being dragged on pavement for 100 meters.

Jul 12 2007 Avatar Machine

avatar-machine.jpg
Avatar Machine is a custom rig designed so the wearer can see themselves in the third person, as if they were playing an online game.
The virtual communities created by online games have provided us with a new medium for social interaction and communication. Avatar Machine is a system which replicates the aesthetics and visuals of third person gaming, allowing the user to view themselves as a virtual character in real space via a head mounted interface. The system potentially allows for a diminished sense of social responsibility, and could lead the user to demonstrate behaviors normally reserved for the gaming environment.
This is hilarious and sad on so many levels. But mostly hilarious. Check out the video after the jump.

Jul 11 2007 Pixel Mario cake made from cupcake squares

mario-cupcakes.jpg
This is a Mario pixel cake made from little cupcake squares. It was for some guy's wedding, which I can't decide is either the coolest wedding cake ever or the worst. No, the worst would definitely be the one I baked out of used condoms. Everybody kept telling me it was a bad idea, but I just didn't listen. Oh man, I should've listened.

Jul 11 2007 Darth Vader Supreme Edition Costume

darth-vader-costume.jpg
If you've got $850 to spare, you can get this Darth Vader Supreme Edition Costume which was actually made using the original Darth Vader molds. Pretty much everything is included, including all the body parts, the helmet, and even a breathing sound device. Although I can't tell if this is supposed to be displayed or actually worn. Wait, what am I talking about? It's for super nerds, so clearly it's for making love to!

Jul 11 2007 Perl Scripting With Microsoft Vista Speech Recognition

Windows Vista's Speech Recognition is almost too good. I'm not even sure why we still have keyboards.
NOTE: I can't tell if this is real. I know Vista's Speech Recognition isn't super amazing, but this is ridiculous. Ridiculously funny that is.

Jul 11 2007 Philippe Starck's Veiled Watch

veiled-watch.jpg
Designer Philippe Starck put together the Veiled Watch which hides the face behind a specially electroplated crystal to mimic the breaks in the bracelet. The design creates the effect that the watch is just a continuous metal band. You can the watch for $150 off Fossil which they describe as:
The crystal is specially electroplated to mimic the breaks in the bracelet, and the sides of the case continue the effect with carefully etched details for design continuity. The crown is a case-back pusher to continue the uncluttered elegance of this style. The shiny stainless steel bracelet is designed to remain thin and comfortable wtih hidden links.
It's a neat concept, but if people can't tell you're wearing a watch they'll think you're wearing a bracelet. A giant silver bracelet. Which is cool for chicks, but should I also invest in some high heels and a skirt?

Jul 10 2007 Phonofone Earphone Amplification Device

phonotonics.jpg
The Phonofone is an audio amplification device which will play back music from earphones. You simply place earphones on it and it uses the properties of horn acoustics to play it back up to 55 decibles.
Through passive amplification alone, These unique pieces instantly transform any personal music player + earbuds into a sculptural audio console. Without the use of external power or batteries, the Phonofone inventively exploits the virtues of horn acoustics to boost the audio output of standard earphones to up to 55 decibles* (or roughly the maximum volume of laptop speakers) Upon connecting active earphones to the Phonofone their trebly buzzing is instantly and profoundly transformed into a warm, rich and resonant sound.
It's a neat idea, but why not just buy some speakers? They might not look as cool, but then you wouldn't have to carry around a ceramic phonograph all day. Plus this thing costs $830 so, you know, you'll probably have to sell your first born child to afford them.

Jul 10 2007 Runaway Wrecking Ball

runaway-wrecking-ball.jpg
A 1,500 pound wrecking ball broke loose and ran out of control down a hill for nearly a mile before plowing into things and ending up in the trunk of a student's car.
“The cable just snapped,” Meadville police officer Brian Joseph said. “It just so happened that it snapped at a point and time when the ball was outside the wall.” The out of control ball hit parked cars and even bounced off the curb, before it rolled into the trunk of a student's car, ramming it into cars in front of it.
Could've been a lot worse. The wrecking ball could've been, say, a locomotive! I don't even know what I'm saying anymore.

Jul 10 2007 1993 Lincoln Mark VIII Rolling Door Concept Car

rolling-door-concept.jpg
The 1993 Lincoln Mark VIII Rolling Door Concept Car was designed back in 1993 but never made it to the market because, well, it's ridiculous. Basically instead of opening, the door just disappears into the car. There's an eBay sale of it going on (right now at $19,000) and according to their description:
"Lincoln executives were concerned about the heavy and wide doors on the Mark VIII in the early 1990's especially in large cities with tight parking spots. They were toying with the idea of a Mark VIII that had doors that disappeared beneath the car which would require no additional space for the doors to swing open in order to allow the occupant to exit or enter. Back in the day, the major auto makers would sub-contract their concept designs to other engineering firms who specialiazed in auto concepts and executions. In this particular case, this Lincoln Mark VIII was shipped over to Joalto Design Inc. near Detroit...who created this amazing, one of a kind concept car and shipped it back to Lincoln for executive approval...Unfortunately, the Ford Motor Company executives did not like the design and ordered the car (and the concept) to be sent to the junkyard and destroyed. The current owner had been tracking this car for nearly 20 years and finally convinced the previous owner to part with it."
Check out the video of the car in action after the jump. It will blow your mind.

Jul 10 2007 Musipen MP3 Player

musipien.jpg
Chris Williams has put together a unique concept design for an MP3 player which is controlled by twisting and sliding the edge of the player. The Musipen (music and pen, get it?) moves away from current players and offers up an original but still highly usable interface. Although not nearly as original and usable as the MP3 player I designed. It's made out of fruit and you control it with your mind. I lost the prototype, but trust me, it was awesome.

Jul 9 2007 Nimbus 20-inch Ultimate Wheel

ultimate-wheel.jpg
Nimbus has put together the ultimate minimalist unicycle which they're calling the Ultimate Wheel. It's basically a 20 inch wheel with pedals attached. And that's it. The only way you could simplify a unicycle any more would be to remove the pedals and just have a wheel. Which is what I ride around when I'm not driving my paper car. I'm poor. =(

It costs $198, but that's a bargain considering how inadequate it'll make all your other alcoholic friends feel.

Jul 9 2007 Papercraft T-Rex automata eats caveman

anitrex350.gifFlying Pig has created this amazing T-Rex papercraft automata which they describe as:
A super fun animated paper model for you to pop out and make. Turn the handle on the terrible T.Rex and he reaches down and bites! The T.Rex catches any object placed beneath his might jaws with the power of paper. Awesome! Includes free anachronistic cave man for your T.Rex to eat. Follow the fully illustrated instructions and, with an evening or two of your time and a tube of PVA glue you can have this delightful model for your collection.
It's even more impressive that it's completely constructed from paper and glue. Sort of like my car. My horribly depressing car.

Jul 9 2007 Nixon Lodown LCD Tide Watch

nixxon-lodown.jpg
Nixon's Lodown digital watch is pre-programmed with tide charts for 200 beaches around the world for the next 15 years. It uses a backlit LCD screen which shows a pixel graph of the current surf height. It's made from reinforced polycarbonate, is water resistant up to 100 meters, and costs about $90. Although I don't understand how they managed to pre-program tides for the next 15 years. Isn't it just a bunch of wild guessing at that point?

Korean company GPNC has put together a 70 inch all-in-one PC, making it the world's largest. The monitor is meant for commercial use and will come in both touch-screen and standard LCD models. Although the manufacturer didn't even bother taking a product shot without an XP error message in it, so who knows what kind of effort they're putting into this thing. If you open up the monitor it's probably just filled with styrofoam peanuts instead of actual electronics.

War, who termed the specimen "octosquid" for the way it looked, said it was about a foot long, with white suction cups, eight tentacles and an octopus head with a squidlike mantle.
Meh. Give me an octopus, a squid, and a stapler, and I'll give you all sorts of new species.

Jul 5 2007 Geek Squad is stealing your porn

geek-squad-porn.jpg
Consumerist launched a three month investigation into Geek Squad on claims the technicians would browse computers for sensitive files and then copy them over to their personal drives. They loaded up a computer with porn, rigged the computer to capture video of itself, and then caught a Geek Squad technician stealing the porn off the hard drive. Geek Squad responded that it was an isolated incident, although insiders say the practice is extremely common. So let this be a warning to everyone: keep all your sensitive files on an external hard drive unless you want to share them with Geek Squad employees. Or better yet, just email them all to me and I'll watch over them for you. See this tie I'm wearing? That's how you call tell I'm a professional.

Unless you count the ones I built. Although those are aren't really speakers, they're more like blocks of wood.

Jul 5 2007 Apple Steals Stuff

Turns out Apple has a pretty bad habit of stealing ideas from artists. Engadget put together a little collection of their recent thefts and it's pretty shameful. These are some old (but still clever) ads for a European job search site, with the tag line: "Life's too short for the wrong job." Which I'd normally agree with, but I've been a land mine tester for years and life is great. Although why not save the police some time, and instead of buying this suitcase just wear a sign around your neck that says "I'm psychotic."

Jul 3 2007 Apple replaces broken iPhone

broken-iphone.jpg
This clumsy fool broke his iPhone less than 24 hours after getting it. He brought it back to the Apple store and those glorious bastards replaced it for free. He writes:
Well, I guess I'm the clumsiest person in the world. I managed to smash the screen less than 24 hours after I got it. I tried answering a call while it was plugged in and the short cord pulled it out of my hand and hit the corner of a table on the way down. 100% my fault. Believe it or not, I brought this into the Apple store and they gave me a brand new phone for free. Talk about fantastic customer care. I am in love 4-eva with Apple.
Apple is really on a roll here. And it's not even necessary because they've already won my heart. The flowers and chocolate they sent me last week were enough. And the poem? *swoon*

Jul 2 2007 The Ultimate Coffee Cup

ultimate-coffee-cup.jpg
Designer David Pier believes he's put together the ultimate coffee cup, which he describes as:
The ultimate in ergonomic modern design. A unique and innovative cup that is as delightful to the hand as it is to the eye. Usually, original designs are different just to be different and therefore can be awkward to use, but this mug was designed to be superior in its function. Every convention was challenged during the design process; new techniques were even developed to accurately manufacture the unusual shape. Just as no time or effort was spared in the design, only the finest porcelain was used in the manufacture.
You can get them for $22 each here, though it's not nearly as ultimate as the designer would have you believe. I asked mine to pick up some groceries and all it did was crash my car into a tree. Ultimate my ass!

The Kickbar features a 2 carat rectangular bar fitted with 54 diamonds and costs $7,500. Although I can't figure out who the market for this is. Anybody dumb enough to buy a $7,500 shoelace clip couldn't possibly have $7,500 saved up. Heck, I'd be surprised if they had $7.50 saved up. The only thing they'd have in their savings account is a half-eaten hamburger.

Not only did they change the name, but they're also selling Kwik-E-Mart products like Squishees and Krusty-O's. They even have characters like Jasper as the 'Freezer Geezer' littered about the store. Although if you happen to wander in, I'm sure you'll find the ratio of 'nerds with cameras' is about 10 million times higher than an actual Kwik-E-Mart. And by nerds with cameras I mean me.
